# When Porter stops on its own

A recording you forget to end is a recording that fills your phone with an hour of car noise. So if Porter hears nothing for a while, it asks.

## The prompt

A card slides up over the recorder:

> **Still talking?** Porter hasn't heard anything for a while. It will end this recording in 20s.

You have two buttons:

* **Keep recording** — dismisses the prompt and carries on.
* **End recording** — same as tapping Done.

If you do not answer, the countdown runs out and Porter ends the recording for you. Nothing is lost: the audio is saved and queued exactly as if you had tapped Done. The Record tab tells you afterwards — *"Ended after a quiet stretch. The recording is queued to upload."*

## Changing how long it waits

Go to **Account → Recording settings → End after silence**:

| Option     | Use it when                                                                                                |
| ---------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **2 min** | Short doorstep conversations, and you want the recorder to tidy up after itself quickly. |
| **5 min** | The default. Fine for most visits. |
| **10 min** | Longer sit-down appointments with real pauses — walking the property, waiting while someone reads a quote. |

This setting is stored on your phone, so it applies to your device rather than your whole workspace.

{% hint style="warning" %}
Porter measures **silence**, not talking. Background noise — a TV, traffic, a running engine — counts as sound and will keep a recording alive past the timer.
