# Add notes while you record

While a recording is running, a **Notes** card appears on the Record tab, underneath the recording card.

1. Minimise the recorder (chevron, top left) to get back to the Record tab.
2. Type into **Note what was said**.
3. Tap **Add**.

The card then tells you how many notes are saved with this recording.

## What notes are for

A note is the thing you would otherwise scribble on the back of a card: the size they quoted, the neighbour's name, the date they said they would decide. The transcript will have the words, but a note is you flagging what mattered.

Notes are attached to the recording, not to your phone. They travel with it, and they appear on the conversation once it has uploaded — see [Summary](/docs/reviewing-a-conversation/summary.md).

## Notes after the visit

You do not have to take notes during the conversation. Every conversation has a notes section you can add to afterwards, for as long as it exists. Adding a note during the recording is just faster while it is fresh.

{% hint style="info" %}
Notes are timestamped by when you saved them, not by where you were in the conversation.
